Selecting cushions can seem tricky, but with a few simple tips and ideas you will be able to mix and match cushions like a stylist.
8 tips for perfect cushions:
1. Texture, Texture, Texture
Combine different fabrics together to create textural interest.
2. Size
Think school picture time, bigger cushions at the back and little ones to the front.
3. Orientation
Not all your cushions have to sit straight, placing some cushions at an angle creates interest and a more casual, inviting feel.
4. Placement
Try to evenly mix your solid coloured cushions with your patterned cushions, so that the overall mix seems even and balanced.
5. How Many?
Remember you need room to sit down, so if you don't want to be pushing your cushions onto the floor each time you want to relax, try not to go too overboard with the number. Odd numbers look more pleasing, so for a two-seater sofa we would recommend 3 or 5 cushions and for a three-seater 5 or 7 cushions.
6. The Best Stuffing
Feather cushion inserts are the best option as they will mold to the shape of your body and can be easily plumped up to restore their appearance. Feathers also last a lot longer than synthetic fills like polyester.
7. To Chop Or Not To Chop
Some people like to chop the top of their cushions Chuck Norris style, to make them appear fuller. This can create a forced, bunny-ear appearance. We prefer to keep the look more casual and just gently tap the sides of our cushions to plump them up and create the same full effect.
8. Colour
The best way to choose a colour palette is to look around your room and see what colours you already have in artwork and accessories. By including these colours on your sofa you will create a consistent feel throughout the room. If you are working from scratch, find one hero cushion you really love and use it as the inspiration to find similar colours.
Cushions are a cost effective and easy way to refresh a room. Why not try warmer colours in knit fabrics in winter and brighter colours in soft cotton and linen fabrics for summer?
